Case Study #1

The Challenge

Cancord was approached by an organization tasked with inspecting a network of underground sewer systems. The organization was looking for a means of protecting the fiber optic cable they would use for this inspection, and approached Cancord to see if it could be suitably encased and protected in a protective fiber rope

The Criteria

  • The rope must be manufactured so as to keep the fiber optic cable protected from external dirt and sewage
  • The rope must be manufactured with elongation properties that would prevent the fiber optic cable from breaking
  • The rope must be manufactured to allow ease of handling for the final length of more than 50,000 feet
  • The rope must be manufactured in a timely manner to meet tight project deadlines

The Solution

Cancord used a combination of high strength fibers to engineer a 53,000′ umbilical that safely protected the fiber optic cable. The project was completed ahead of schedule, and the fiber optic cable maintained its integrity while in use in the rope.

Case Study #2

The Challenge

Cancord was approached by a chain of retail stores interested in adding a line of General Purpose Cordage Products to their inventory. They were frustrated with their current supplier who could not supply retail friendly packaging.

The Criteria

  • Showcase an assortment of General Purpose Cordage Products
  • Visually appealing, high impact display
  • Minimize display footprint in retail space
  • Emphasize quality and Canadian made

The Solution

Cancord worked with the retail chain to understand its customer base. It created a custom retail display that worked well in the individual stores. Cancord developed custom packaging to emphasize and reinforce the branding of the retail chain. The end result was a high impact display that took up less space in the stores, and in the end was more economical for the retail chain then their previous rope assortment.

Case Study #3

The Challenge

Cancord was contacted by a company who was using galvanized aircraft cable in a pulley system. The galvanized cable was fatiguing too quickly causing aggravation and excessive down time.

The Criteria

  • Able to withstand a 400lb load
  • UV resistant
  • Must not flatten under load
  • Maximum allowable diameter 1/8″
  • Low Elongation
  • Must withstand 1 million cycles back and forth over a 1.5″ pulley
  • Must have swaged loops in both ends

The Solution

Cancord used a combination of high strength fibers to engineer a cord that exceeded the customer’s requirements and expectations.  The customer benefitted from smoother running operations with minimal aggravation and down time.

Case Study #4

The Challenge

Cancord was contacted by a commercial diving operation doing some recovery work. They were having difficulties with their equipment cables tangling, and getting damaged while in use. In addition to the cost associated with the damage, there were continuing delays to the work jeopardizing promised deadlines.

The Criteria

  • Combine & contain up to 8 different cables and air hoses into 1 rope
  • Protection for the delicate cables
  • Superior abrasion resistance
  • Elongation properties such that none of the cables or hoses break while the assembly is in use
  • Minimize overall weight to facilitate handling
  • Fast turnaround

The Solution

Cancord used several layers of braiding with an assortment of high tech filler yarns to create a series of Dive Umbilicals which allowed the cables and air hoses to stay secure as the divers descended and performed the recovery work. Cancord was able to develop the ideal dive rope umbilical combination for each set of cables and air hoses in a timely manner. The completed rope umbilicals were delivered to the customer quickly allowing the customer to meet their overall deadline without further damage to their equipment.

Case Study #5

The Challenge

Cancord was approached by a company looking to replace the galvanized aircraft cables they traditionally used as guy lines for their towers. They wanted to explore fiber rope options.

The Criteria

  • Superior UV and weather resistance
  • High strength
  • Low elongation
  • Good knot-ability

The Solution

Cancord developed a line of low elongation, high strength guy line ropes using a combination of fibers braided in such a way as to minimize elongation, while providing exceptional UV and weather resistance. These ropes were designed with exceptional knot-ability and a high visibility tracer for identification.
